LUCID LIFE
(BIO-DESIGN)
LUCID LIFE IS AN INNOVATIVE PROJECT BY CHRISTOPHER BELLAMY, EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL OF CONTEMPORARY LIVING MATERIALS THROUGH BIOLUMINESCENT MICRO-ALGAE—A UNIQUE ORGANISM THAT EMITS LIGHT IN RESPONSE TO TOUCH. BY HARNESSING THIS NATURAL PHENOMENON, THE PROJECT MERGES SCIENCE, DESIGN, AND TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE TO REIMAGINE HOW WE INTERACT WITH MATERIALS AND OUR ENVIRONMENT.
IN COLLABORATION WITH CHRISTOPHER, ISABELLA SMITH CREATED A BODYSUIT AS PART OF THE PROJECT TO EXPLORE THE MATERIAL IN A WEARABLE SETTING.

THE DESIGN REFERENCES THE ORGANIC MOVEMENT OF ALGAE ITSELF, FEATURING INTERTWINING SLEEVE PANELS THAT MIMIC ITS FLOWING, DYNAMIC FORMS. THE BODYSUIT’S ASYMMETRIC SILHOUETTE AND WATERPROOF CONSTRUCTION ALLOW IT TO BE WORN BOTH ON LAND AND IN WATER, EMPHASISING THE FLUID, EVER-CHANGING NATURE OF THE MATERIAL IT ENCAPSULATES. ER.
DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY OF FRENCH POLYNESIA’S CONNECTION TO NATURE AND THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS OF CORAL, LUCID LIFE BRIDGES ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE WITH CUTTING-EDGE MATERIAL INNOVATION.
